Experienced marijuana activists Toronto Hash Mob, organizers of Wed Apr. 20 Yonge and Dundas Square 420 Smoke Out will step up a few weeks later  to protect May 7 Global Marijuana March. Despite fear-mongering logistic concerns. For the past several years the anti-prohibition protest has been held in conjunction with an event, Toronto Freedom Festival. The festival, which co-opted the marijuana movement to create a party vibe, was turned down for a festival permit this year by the city and province. Suddenly fears about the annual protest march being held circulated (possibly by TFF), but were clarified yesterday on their site, if you could find the information. “On Saturday May 7th, thousands of individuals from around the world will once again enjoy the Global Marijuana March but not with the support of TFF, threatening the quality and overall safety of the march.”
The Global Marijuana March will be happen, it’s just going to be a dramatically different. It’s going to go back to being anti-prohibition rally with little amenenties.
No Toronto Freedom Festival official booths selling stoner stuff.
No private security force.
No stage with bad bands performing.
No pott-a-johns.
Toronto Hash Mob has an excellent working relationship with the Toronto Police Service. We march and they make sure we don’t get hit by cars. We are the activists in the front of the rallies. THM is willing to step in fill out the TPS Notice of Demonstration if need be. A simple form notifying TPS a large gathering of people is happening. It requires no pre approval. Nor funds.
Last summer Toronto Hash Mob occupied MPs offices, protested in front US Consulate numerous times to Free Marc Emery, gave away a ton of water, several pounds of pot during G20 and generally raised a stink. Coached by Matt Mernagh a/k/a Mernahuana and lead by Chris Goodwin a/ka/a Goodster and Davin Christensen a/k/a Maddchronic, the friends have a great deal of experience organizing marches. But none organziing festivals.
Toronto Hash Mob is prepared to do our part to ensure the march safely travels through our neighborhood. We’ve never had a problem. Our reputation for safety is well known amongst the activist community and with Toronto Police Service. To coordinate our legalization efforts this summer, we are proud to announce the opening of our HashMob Freedom Party Headquarters. The new Dundonald Street location will be a hub for people who want to be involved in legalizing marijuana via stoner social media.
Our Apr. 20 Smoke Out poster is currently being designed and should be ready this week or next.

Out of curiosity…how was your reputation with the Toronto Police after someone showed up with a gun at your 420 rally held at Yonge Dundas Square?

  • Sam Seed

Good question SmokinAce, I’m assuming you’re talking about this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiRKctaP6UA watch all parts (3 part)
I’m not part of the Hashmob but I think that the situation was handled pretty well. If I was a cop, I wouldnt be concerned too much.

Glad you asked. According to Toronto Police Service media release the
incident happened beside our rally. An attendee at our rally is
credited with disarming the gun man. The police recognized the gang
member was not a protester. Secondly the safety committee for Yonge &
Dundas has recommended we receive amplified sound. In case of
emergency we can notify police. Its strange how the so called
marijuana movement promotes a negative perception of hardest working
activists while we do receive a modicum of respect out there. How many
of our rallies have u attended?

I wrote this “Petition to Legitimize Our Cannabis Industries” with quotes from; Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter , Milton Friedman, Henry Ford, George Washington , Ulysses S. Grant, Warren g. Harding, & more. I hope everybody reads it, likes it, & signs it. Much love all!!

I don’t believe that the March will be the same this year without the coinciding TFF. I for one, won’t bother to go. The TFF helped bring a sense of community and unity to the March. Every year that I have been there, I have never had, seen, or heard of a single negative incident.
I think that for the city of Toronto to see such a large group gather and enjoy themselves without incident brings very positive community support for our cause.
I also think your comment about “bad bands performing” is unjustified. Where is your support for our local talented musicians? The movement is supposed to be about positivity and change, why did you feel the need to strike a blow at your fellow supporters?

  • http://www.mernagh.ca Matt Mernagh

you proved the point i was trying to make the other day. im sure you have only attended the years when there is a Toronto Freedom Festival. in other words you’ve never been to a demonstration or rally before. what you’re asking is the protesters to create this ideal space for you to pollute. you clearly missed both Toronto Star and Globe and Mail write numerous paragraphs about the trash problem.

  • zp

Actually, I’ve attended numerous demonstrations before. The most recent one being the end of January at Parliament hill. Also, I’ve attended the March without going to the TFF afterward.
I’m aware of the trash problem. There is a trash problem with any public event. I don’t believe that working out a better clean-up strategy is something that is beyond the festival’s organizers…

PISSSING OF THE CITY ISNT HELPING. Matt has always been a goof and now is old and washed up at least for last 8 years. Davin, well what is it that he does with all this activism? no job, sells pot= great leader, i have been to central vapor and im thinking he is that guy who looks sick and squats there no? Pardon the barrier i am Quebec and wish this was put together better, most wont to come but not that far to risk a problems in parks.

  • http://www.mernagh.ca Matt Mernagh

if im old and washed up how am i pissing off the city?

  • Herbed

Hey while I barely know the hash mob, some respect for what they are trying to accomplish is due. While some may not agree with the methods used,at least something is being done in a time of nit picking petty criticisms and rampant apathy. I mean surely we can recognize that there is an ever growing number of people calling for the decriminalization/legalization of cannibus, yet how is that to be accomplished with inter fighting and miss placed egos getting in the way? Further if you don’t like said methods of the hash mob or individual members why not start your own group of grassroots activists to offer the alternative to what ever is so offensive, rather than being overly critical without offering anything constructive in its place…

  • http://www.mernagh.ca Matt Mernagh

i like this idea…why not start your own activist group. there’s already a facebook group referred to as Raise A Stink. instead of bashing us get your session or joint circle and do something. write a letter, make a stoned phone call to your mp, something not sitting on your computer trying to rip the doers a new asshole.
